Having spent the past year trying to help some of the hardest hit US municipalities develop and implement youth violence prevention strategies, there are some encouraging signs.
It was great to feel and see the energy and passion of youth leaders and voice this past Saturday seeking action for common-sense gun reforms. In all of the communities in which I was working easy access to firearms was the number one problem. Why it always seems to take a Parkland to move to action is shameful, it would be worse to lose this opportunity to change policy
Yesterday had an equally rewarding day touring youth detention and rehabilitation centers with the DC Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services. Through restorative justice and programs like credible messenger, these folks are saving and changing lives. Many of the credible messengers are former convicts and gang members themselves. Incredibly hard and tough work but the results are amazing.
